A giraffe in a Chinese zoo gave birth to a healthy pair of giraffe twins, a rare occurrence for the species, local news reported on Saturday. The mother, named Bei Bei, delivered male giraffe twins on Thursday (December 16) in a zoo in northern China’s Hebei Province after over an hour and a half in labor, state media reported. For a week before the delivery, the mother’s bulging abdomen prevented her from lying down. Zoo workers were on hand to assist the mother through the difficult labor, state media said. According to the zoo representatives, the calves measured 5 feet 11 inches and 6 feet 2 inches tall and were able to stand and walk. This is the first set of twin giraffes born in China.
