Science Fiction in Real Life: Microsoft shows Holodesk VIDEO

HoloDesk – Direct 3D Interactions with a Situated See-Through Display. Microsoft Research shows Holodesk. HoloDesk is a novel interactive system combining an optical see through display and Kinect camera to create the illusion that users are directly interacting with 3D graphics. A virtual image of a 3D scene is rendered through a half silvered mir-ror and spatially aligned with the real-world for the viewer.Users easily reach into an interaction volume displaying the virtual image. This allows the user to literally get their hands into the virtual display. A novel real-time algorithm for rep-resenting hands and other physical objects, which are sensed by the Kinect inside this volume, allows physically realistic interaction between real and virtual 3D objects. Holodesk, a research project out of the Sensors and Devices group at Microsoft Research Cambridge. The Sensors and Devices Group is part of the

Computer-Mediated Living research area and works with technologies such as sensors, flexible electronics, novel displays, wireless communications, ubiquitous and mobile devices. We collaborate closely with researchers from other disciplines with the goal of understanding how advances in technology will impact traditional computing and the ways in which people use and interact with computing devices. Microsoft Research Cambridge was set up in July 1997 with three researchers. Today over 100 researchers, mostly from Europe, are engaged in computer research at the lab. The city of Cambridge, England, was the clear choice for the location of the facility because of its world-renowned reputation and its rich history as a center of learning. About Microsoft Research.Turning ideas into reality, Microsoft Research is dedicated to conducting both basic and applied research in computer science and software engineering. Researchers focus on more than 60 areas of computing and collaborate with leading academic, government and industry researchers to advance the state of the art. Microsoft Research has expanded over the years to eight locations worldwide and a number of collaborative projects that bring together the best minds in computer science to advance a research agenda based on their unique talents and interests.
